Section 504 is a federal law designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education.
Students who have physical or mental impairment(s) that substantially limit a major life activity may be protected under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Students who qualify under the law may receive reasonable accommodations affording them access to the educational environment.
A referral for a Section 504 evaluation could result in a request for a special education evaluation if the disability could also fall within a category of special education eligibility.
