Outdoor Explorers<\/strong>
Instructor: Irene Gruenfeld and Katie Griffith<\/strong>
Join 5th grade teacher Irene Gruenfeld and ecologist Katie Griffith on weekly adventures in Boulder Brook Reservation. We will hike, play nature-based games, do scavenger hunts, look for animal tracks, create outdoor art with natural materials, draw, and more. Our goal is to foster a love of the outdoors and a deeper understanding of nature. Kids will discover the wonders and beauty of Boulder Brook while growing their skills as naturalists. Students should be prepared to be outdoors each session, including appropriate footwear and pants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recreate Reese’s Cups

Students recreate Reese’s Cups into a new snack that is nut free. Students will engineer chocolate flavors, create a new filling, make a recipe and develop packaging and labeling. Students end the program with a brand new snack they have created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get Your Lego Game On! Are you a Lego master? If so, it\u2019s time to show off your skills! Each week in Lego Adventures, there is a new challenge to build: From skyscrapers to farms, bridges to airports, space stations to main streets, and everything in between! First, our Right Brain Curriculum instructors will review the history of what we are about to build: How airports graduated from landing strips to vast travel networks, how Depression-era farms survived hordes of grasshoppers, how aeroelasticity explains why the Tacoma bridge nicknamed \u201cGalloping Gertie\u201d collapsed. Then, it\u2019s time to build! You will create a model of each type of structure out of an enormous assortment of provided Legos, then present your creation as we photograph and document it. This immersive program offers students the chance to construct a wide variety of animal robots, including a tail-wagging dog and a trainable, self-moving unicorn. Throughout the program, participants will learn the fundamentals of working with mainboards, DC motors, gears, and axles while building robots inspired by various members of the animal kingdom. Put on your lab coats and secure your goggles- it’s time for some whacky science with CinemaKidz! From mixing magic potions and making a slime monster come to life with stop motion, to building bottle rockets and tin foil boats- anything is possible in Weird Science Television! Working together in lab teams, kids will learn, then demonstrate and show others how to make mind-blowing experiments and more for their kid-run science show. Using their science skills, these creative kids will create their own Bill Nye-inspired TV show from planning, to filming, to editing each episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
