Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers-
Given our current, difficult circumstances, I know many of you are concerned with your student‘s services and progress. I know you have been reaching out to school staff with many questions. Unfortunately, federal and state laws related to special education and students with disabilities do not specifically address a situation in which school would be closed for an extended period due to unusual circumstances, such as a pandemic.
As the Wellesley Public Schools is not in session and following the guidance we have received to date from the state, the district will not be providing special education services to our students for the time being. We will also not be holding special education or 504 team meetings during this closure period. Home/hospital tutoring or home services will be on hold as well.
However, in an effort to stay connected and meet the needs of all of our students and families, many WPS remote alternative learning/enrichment opportunities include suggestions on how to adjust activities. Our special educators and providers have put together some wonderful suggested resources for students and families to support their students‘ skills during this difficult and unprecedented time. All staff who normally provide services to our students with disabilities will make every effort to be available remotely for check-ins and support during this closure. I encourage you to reach out to them via email.
When schools resume, individual IEP teams may need to meet to determine if any additional services are needed for specific students.
As guidance around our school closure in Massachusetts continues to evolve–sometimes daily–please know that we will calibrate our services based on the direction we receive from the MA Dept of Elementary and Secondary Education and the federal Office of Special Education Programs. We will of course keep our community updated as well.
Thank you for your patience and understanding, and please stay safe and healthy!
