Dear Hunnewell,Over the next two weeks, the studens in third, fourth, and fifth grade will participate in the English Language Arts portion of MCAS 2.0.  As a school distrct, we use the results of these assessments mindfully and only as one piece of data on student performance, effective instruction, and alignment with the Common Core. Through professional development during staff meetings, we have exposed teachers to the types of questions students will encounter and have encouraged the teachers to familiarize the students with the test format; however, we have de-emphasized teaching to the test. As a school community, we have prepared your children to do the best that they can do on these assessments by teaching them the strategies and skills necessary to tackle this assessment. This work begins in kindergarten and continues through their time at Hunnewell.
While we ask that the children give these tests their best effort, as they would do on any piece of school work, we want to reduce if not completely eliminate any stress or anxiousness that a child might feel. One way to support your child during this assessment window is to make sure that they get a good night sleep and have a healthy breakfast. We ask that you do everything you can to get your child to school on time in order to reduce the stress that can come when arriving late. If your child is sick, please keep them home as we do offer make-up dates.
I hope you enjoy this long weekend!
