Recently a few parents have asked me if they need to stay with their child during Morning Mingle, and I have noticed children arriving unsupervised on the playground between 8:05 and 8:10, so I want to clarify some key points about arrival at Hunnewell.
The Hunnewell blacktop opens at 8:15. Please make sure that your child is not left unsupervised on the playground prior to 8:15. At 8:15 our blacktop is supervised, and you absolutely do not have to stay at the back of the school until your child goes inside. We do have staff out there to supervise and manage students according to the school rules.
Secondly, the school day begins promptly at 8:30. If your child comes into the building after that time, they are marked tardy. It is incredibly important that children be here to start the school day with their classmates. Students who arrive late disrupt the morning routines and miss morning meetings. Please make every attempt to have your child here on time!
This year as another example of our commitment to social and emotional learning, every classroom has a morning meeting between 8:35 and 8:50. Morning meetings provide an opportunity for students to greet one another and to hear about the day ahead. Children might also be given an opportunity to share or preview or review some academic content. It is a key component to the Responsive Classroom approach and while academic content may be a part of the meeting, the primary focus is to build social skills and a safe, collaborative, and welcoming classroom community. This time can also be used to practice important general skills like listening, following directions, speaking, etc.

We appreciate every effort you make to get your children here on time and ready to learn!
