I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer vacation with family and friends. I am excited to welcome you all back for the 2019-20 school year!
I want to provide a quick reminder that in order to find out your child’s classroom teacher, you must update the Parent Portal with emergency contact information, directory information, and other important permissions for your child/ren. The Parent Portal opened today. I have attached information from the district about the parent portal and how to access it.
Please know that the teachers, specialists, special educators, psychologists, and I spend many hours to determine class placement. It is a thoughtful and thorough process that is designed to consider past groupings, learning styles, learning partners, future opportunities, gender equity, and any parent information received. The number of sections at each grade level also impacts the placement process.
The opportunity to make new connections and build a strong classroom community depends on the commitment of every member in the classroom to live by our C.A.R.E. values. To provide context for new families and to highlight again for all families, each classroom is part of our larger Hunnewell culture, which is guided by our C.A.R.E. values. Community, Acceptance, Respect, and Effort towards Excellence are words that define the way we do business as a school and the way we treat each other.
The teachers will focus the first six weeks of school on establishing the routines, procedures, expectations, and classroom rules, so that every child feels welcome, supported, challenged, cared for, and safe. Every teacher is committed to knowing the individual students in the class and then building connections between the students to build a strong classroom community.
Your child/ren’s classroom teacher/s will be mailing a summer letter to you and your child/ren on or after August 19th. If you did not take advantage of ordering your child’s supply kit through the PTO and you want to avoid long lines at the end of August, you can find grade-level supply lists on the Hunnewell web site in the Back to School Packet.
Stay tuned for more detailed information about our district and school goals and initiatives for the year ahead, including the roll-out of our new Standards Based Report Card, additional opportunities for students to participate in Project-Based Learning, the roll-up of Spanish FLES to fifth grade, our continued work with the social/emotional competencies, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making, our on-going commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the work we began last year at Hunnewell around The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. It promises to be an exciting year!
