Dear Hunnewell,

A special thank you to our own Katie Dexter, conductor of the fifth grade chorus and Hunnewell Band, and Russell Wilson, conductor of the Hunnewell/Sprague Orchestra. This year’s winter concert was spectacular! The musicians worked hard to get ready for this performance and it was obvious to all of us in the audience! We were a captive audience.

I also want to thank Erin Battat and Janine Pires for coordinating our Wellesley-Boston Family Friends’ Breakfast this past Wednesday morning. While the winter weather made it challenging for some people to attend, those that were able to make it enjoyed a lovely breakfast and had the opportunity to meet Brandon Cox, the Elementary Academic Coordinator for Metco. Mr. Cox spends every Wednesday at Hunnewell in classrooms supporting all of our students. Later that same morning, Mr. Cox and I facilitated a conversation with the third, fourth and fifth grade students on diversity, equity and inclusion. Dr. Charmie Curry, our Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion was also able to attend. We read aloud the book, The Day You Begin written by Jacqueline Woodson, which is a lovely story about finding the courage to be yourself even when you feel different and alone. Many students shared personal experiences of times when they have been excluded or worried because they have felt different than others. Mr. Cox and I look forward to leading more of these conversations over the course of the year, and we will plan a developmentally appropriate conversation for our kindergartners, first and second graders.

I hope you all have a nice weekend!

Sincerely,

Ellen
