Dear Parents & Guardians,

We are excited to announce that Hunnewell students will exchange artwork with children from Syria as participants in the Memory Project’s Global Art Exchange program. The Memory Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating global kindness through art (memoryproject.org).

The intent of the exchange is to promote intercultural awareness, break down cultural and geographical barriers, and inspire creativity through the universal language of art. Art teacher Peter Knapp will introduce the geography, history, and rich culture of Syria, prompting kids to think about both similarities and differences. While children in grades 3-5 will receive age-appropriate information about the Syrian refugee crisis, the main goal is to foster connections that affirm our common humanity.

The project will take place during the next few weeks in art class (no homework required). Students will create a painting, drawing, or work of mixed media inspired by the theme of “peace, friendship, and kindness.” They will then write their first name and age on the back of the artwork, attach a photo of themselves, and trace an outline of their hand, and Syrian students will do the same. As a result, students will see the child with whom they are exchanging art, and symbolically touch hands across the world.

Parents are encouraged to explore Syrian culture with their children at home, and will receive resources to help them to do so. Parents will also be invited to view the artwork from both their children and the piece from a Syrian student once the exchange has happened. We will keep you updated with when this will happen this spring.

Please sign and return the attached permission slip to allow your child to participate. There is no financial obligation, and the identities and locations of all children are kept strictly confidential. (memoryproject.org/privacy).
