As you know school safety is a priority for Hunnewell and the Wellesley Public Schools. Over the course of the year, we collaborate with the Wellesley Police and Fire Department to practice safety and fire drills for staff and students. Today our students participated in a safety drill and practiced evacuating the building as quickly as possible.
To prepare for this emergency drill, each Kindergarten – Fifth grade class discussed how we keep ourselves safe in and out of school. For example, we wear helmets, seat belts and participate in fire drills and bus evacuations. Teachers also shared that their are many different things we might do in an emergency, such as stay in our classroom or move to another space in the building or even leave the building as quickly as possible through the nearest exit. We also reassure students of the low probability of an emergency, but we want to be prepared with a solid plan and take the time to practice.
The students and staff did an excellent job this morning and evacuated the building in under 30 seconds. Later this spring we will have another fire drill and also practice a shelter-in-place drill.
I hope you enjoy a nice weekend!
