{"id":184,"date":"2016-09-03T09:55:52","date_gmt":"2016-09-03T13:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wellesleyps.org\/performingarts\/?page_id=184"},"modified":"2024-12-16T12:22:22","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T17:22:22","slug":"elementary-music","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wellesleyps.org\/performingarts\/performing-arts-education-programs\/elementary-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Elementary Band and Orchestra"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What instruments can join an ensemble?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Band instruments include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Woodwinds: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Percussion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Orchestra instruments include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Chorus is a part of the 5th grade music curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In middle and high school, voice, Piano and Guitar students are encouraged to join chorus or drama\/acting class. Piano and guitar students are also encouraged to audition for jazz band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to join Band or Orchestra<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Please have a conversation with your private lesson teacher about when to&nbsp;join an ensemble. Our IVEP teachers who work with your students know them best; your teacher can advise you when your student is ready, and can benefit the most from joining band or orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are encouraged to join orchestra when they can meet these proficiencies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>can identify and play the correct notes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>familiar with the following notes and rests: whole, half, quarter, and eighth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>understand articulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have a consistent practice regimen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Orchestra<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please be able to play the following scales:<br>Violin: A and D \u2013 1 octave<br>Viola, Cello: D and G&nbsp;\u2013 1 octave<br>Bass: D and G \u2013&nbsp;1 octave (it is especially important for bass students to consult Ms. Lamb before joining)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rehearsal Schedule<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Band and Orchestra take place in the Music Room on the following days, and begin on the date listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rehearsal begins at 8am. Please arrive by 7:45 to unpack and setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Band<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bates:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiske:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hardy:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schofield:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sprague:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Orchestra<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bates: Fridays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiske: Mondays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hardy: Tuesdays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schofield: Wednesdays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sprague: Thursdays<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Concerts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of every&nbsp;semester, each school dedicates an assembly block for the instrumental ensembles and chorus to perform. Concerts will be announced at the beginning of each year by ensemble directors and K-5 music teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fall<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bates: <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiske: <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schofield: <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sprague (w\/ Hunnewell): <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hardy: <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Spring<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bates:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiske:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hardy:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schofield:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sprague (w\/ Hunnewell):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All-Town Ensembles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All-Town Band and All-Town Orchestra combine players from the seven elementary schools into large and exciting groups that rehearse several times in the spring and present a concert combined with the middle school. Middle school ensemble directors lead a portion of rehearsals. Rehearsal and Concert dates will be announced during the fall semester by the elementary ensemble directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beginning Band<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning Woodwind, Brass and Percussion students from all Wellesley Elementary Schools are invited to join the Wellesley Public Schools&#8217; Beginner Band. When students have reached the above proficiencies they may graduate to their School Band.
