Dear Upham Community,

Hello Upham Parents! As you know the Wellesley School Committee unanimously voted to approve the original (“Option A”) swing space proposal for Hunnewell.  This means that beginning in the fall of 2022, Hunnewell grade levels will be moving to other elementary schools for the duration of the construction project.  We will also be creating TLC programs at each of these schools to support the students in that specialized program.

As most of you may have noticed this morning during arrival the teachers presented signs, high-fives, and applause for your support. We are all extremely grateful to you and the PTO leadership for your commitment to Upham. Your efforts brought forth strong support to make sure Upham remains opened until the summer of 2024.

UPHAM PTO

Yes! Go, Upham! We were very excited about the Wellesley School Committee’s decision to approve the “Option A” swing space proposal. Choosing “Option A” allows for Upham to continue to remain open until the summer of 2024. I will be meeting with the Upham PTO on Monday, October 18 to discuss our plan for financial responsibility and volunteerism that will lead us over the next couple of years. We will also discuss an outline for transitioning to new buildings.

STEM WEEK

During the week of October 18-22, students across Massachusetts will be celebrating STEM Week (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics). In Wellesley, we acknowledge the importance of arts in STEM, thus we are celebrating it as STEAM week.

The goal of the week is to have each student in our Wellesley Public Schools community “See yourself in STE(A)M.”

As part of the district celebrations, every student in grades PreK-12 will be engaging in the same design-build challenge: The Marshmallow Challenge. This is an exciting opportunity to build community throughout all schools. Elementary students will be engaging in this design-build activity during their library and art blocks, middle and high school students will be participating during their advisories.

Students will collaborate using 20 pieces of Food Club Spaghetti, 1 yard of tape, 1 yard of string, 1 Campfire Marshmallow, and their imaginations to build the tallest freestanding structure that will support a single marshmallow.
