Dear Upham Community,

I am fairly certain that many of you are completely frustrated with this latest variant of COVID and the impact it has had on our school and more broadly your lives. There are some questions about the lunch and snack procedures we are implementing. First and foremost, please understand that we are desperately working diligently (especially Mrs. Warmington) to keep the building open. Returning to a form of hybrid or full remote is not something we need and it is absolutely not something the students need to experience ever again.

I am fully aware that some of the procedures are difficult to understand (and here comes the big but) but we need to make sure we are distancing during lunch and snack to help mitigate the latest outbreak.

Today we placed chairs six feet apart and the students are now sitting in chairs. We are facing in the same direction (toward the projector screen) and playing appropriate animation videos, science videos, and PBS children’s content during the lunch period. The most frequent question has been, “How long will you be doing this?” The answer. As soon as we see a diminishing infection rate we will then return to a normal lunch. I am so sorry that this latest outbreak has caused so much angst. As I stated above, I hear you, I understand. Please give us a little time and understanding as we navigate this mess.

Additionally, I want to recognize the “Most Amazing School Nurse” on the planet, Mrs. Warmington. She has been an amazing ally, colleague, leader, and well, of course, nurse throughout this latest outbreak. Please send her a nice note or word of encouragement for her diligence, professionalism, and time spent contacting everyone.
