Dear Upham Community,

It is a wonderful pleasure to announce that our outstanding Spanish/FLES teacher, Jocelyn Habib, has been recognized by the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association for excellence in teaching a foreign language and has received a New Teacher Commendation Award.

MaFLA (Massachusetts Foreign Language Association) is an inclusive organization that promotes effective world language education by supporting a diverse community of language educators. The goal of the MaFLA is to support such wonderful educators as Ms. Habib, who demonstrate excellence, and passion and are working successfully toward student proficiency in language and culture. This commendation recognizes new teachers for demonstrated excellence in language education. Please join me in congratulating Ms. Habib! Way to go!

As you know, we are rapidly approaching the end of the year. The students are looking forward to the summer break and are excited to move on to the next grade level. The teachers are equally ready for the break. The principal? Not so much. Although I like the summer fun, I would rather be hanging out with a bunch of elementary children having fun.

Here is the run down of the calendar for the remainder of the year.

Our Field Day is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, and the rain date is Thursday, June 16. This is always a fun day for everyone. If you have volunteered to help, thank you so much for your help. The traditional Teachers vs. Students kickball game will be the culminating event for our Field Day. Please feel free to come out and support your favorite team (teachers). I hope to see you there!

The traditional Fifth Grade Moving-On Ceremony (graduation) will be outside again this year. We had such a wonderfully beautiful morning last year. We hope to do it again. Listening to the fifth graders read their fifth-grade memory is a longstanding tradition at Upham. The Moving-On Ceremony will be on Friday, June 17, from 9:30 AM-10:30 AM. Please arrive at 9:00 AM, and the ceremony will begin promptly at 9:30 AM. Please bring your own seat. We will be on the upper field. If we have rain, we will conduct the ceremony on the same day in the gym. Again, I look forward to seeing you at this wonderful event.

The last day of school is Wednesday, June 21. Remember it is a half-day. We will meet in the gym at 11:30 AM to celebrate the end of the year. Please join us! For over 35 years, Upham has ended the year with a sing-a-long, and the big song each of those years has been “Charlie on the MTA.” If you have not witnessed this magical moment please do not miss it this time around. It truly is a wonderful culminating celebration of the year.

Finally, the traditional “Clap Out” for the 5th graders moving to WMS will occur at 11:55 AM on Wednesday, June 21. It is a time that we line the hallways, and as the current fifth graders walk the Upham halls for a final walk, we enthusiastically clap them out.

Please join us as we celebrate our wonderful students. Your support does make a tremendous difference in all our lives. Thank you!

Dare to Dream,

Mr. Dees
