MRSA Skin Infection Information

April 6, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians,We have received notice that there is a single confirmed case of an antibiotic resistant skin infection called Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at the High School and wanted to give you the following information.MRSA – What is it?MRSA is a type of “staph” infection that is resistant to many antibiotics and frequently causes skin infections.  How is MRSA spread?MRSA skin infections are generally spread by skin-to skin contact or by direct contact with the infected wound.  MRSA may also be spread by contact with contaminated surfaces or items such as sports equipment or personal items.   This is not an infection that is spread through the air. What are the symptoms?  What does it look like?Common signs of a skin infection include redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness.  Often a MRSA infection will look like a spider bite, a bug bite, a boil or abscess.   If left untreated, it could progress into a more serious illness.More information can be found on the CDC website: www.cdc.gov/mrsa/What is being done at school? The WPS and the town Facilities Maintenance Department has a routine in place for on going cleaning and disinfecting of all school equipment and frequently touched surfaces.  This occurs every day.   We also have strict protocols for when we receive notification of an infectious disease.  That protocol was put in place this morning when we were notified.  The focus for cleaning and disinfecting will be in the Fitness Center and locker rooms along with frequently touched surfaces throughout the school.Going forward…We will continue to monitor this situation and carry out cleaning and disinfecting per protocol.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.  The High School Administration and the school nurses, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Sheridan are available if you have questions regarding your child.
Sincerely,                                 Jamie B. Chisum
