Dear Parents,

I thought I would write to let you know we’re up and running at the high school. We had a nice orientation with our 9th graders (I got to meet my own new advisees and they’re fantastic).   We hope we got most of the logistical work out of the way during advisory and class meetings today so that our second day of school will be off and running on a normal schedule.

I also wanted to share with you the text of my speech to the students today at our opening assembly. In general, starting the year on such a serious note isn’t the way we celebrate the opening of a school year.  This year though, I knew we had to be focused on the theme of welcoming and including everyone.

I would love for you to take the time to read it and talk with your children about it.  I don’t think it was a perfect speech, but I hoped it would set a tone for us and be a call to action.  The kids were silent during the delivery.  It is so much better for us all to be talking about this topic so a long term impact can be had.  In the weeks and months to come our plan is to continually send out other prompts, videos, and articles that could keep your discussions going.
