Dear Parents/Guardians,

The School Nurses in conjunction with the Fitness and Health Department will be conducting hearing, vision, height and weight screenings. These screenings will be done during physical education classes starting Monday October 17. Please encourage your child to have their glasses/contacts with them if used routinely during the school day.

Your student will be screened in January if they have a first semester fitness class. All other students will be screened during second semester.

You will receive notification only if your child fails the vision or hearing screening.

You will not be notified of your child’s BMI results unless you request the information.

Massachusetts’s schools have taken heights and weights of students for several years. According to the state’s BMI screening regulations, which passed in April 2009, schools must now collect the height and weight of students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10 and calculate each child’s body mass index (BMI). Theses results will be sent to the state for statistical and informational purposes.

We are vested in making sure that all our students are healthy, stay healthy and learn about healthy living. Please do not hesitate to contact the school nurses if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Shari Johnson, RN
Pam Sheridan, RN
