Dear Students & Guardians of The Class of 2023:

Welcome to Wellesley High School!

At this time, the school is making the final preparations to release 9th-grade schedules for the upcoming school year.  In advance of releasing these schedules, it is important to pass along the following procedural information regarding our scheduling process.  Please review this information carefully, as this is a new procedure for incoming 9th-graders.

When will schedules be officially released for incoming 9th-graders?
Schedules will be released on Thursday, August 22nd.

How do I view my (student’s) schedule?
Schedules can be viewed via your personal PowerSchool account at the following link.  If you have any complications, please contact the High School at 781- 446-6290.

Students may have not received elective requests or may have to make choices between competing interests:
As you review your (student’s) schedule, please remember that every effort has been made to meet all individual requests.  Unfortunately, there are limitations to any schedule, and it is quite possible that due to the complexities of offering such a robust program of studies, you may not have been scheduled for your requested elective classes or you may be forced to make decisions to prioritize between competing interests.  Guidance counselors will be available during the first weeks of school to support students in making these challenging, yet healthy, choices.

What if there is an error in my (student’s) schedule?
If you have one of the following two errors in your (student’s) schedule we ask you to please contact your assigned counselor in the days prior to school starting.

  1. Missing a Major Course Specifically, if you requested a class in one of the following major subject areas and it does not appear on your schedule:  English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Classical or Modern Language, Fitness.  This does not pertain to elective classes.
  2. Placed in the Wrong Level of a Major Course If you requested a specific level class in a major subject area and you were assigned to the wrong level.  To be clear, this is not that you are now interested in selecting a different level course than what you originally selected.  If you are interested in selecting a different level course you must follow the procedure to make a schedule change as outlined below.

How to request a schedule change:
Students interested in requesting a schedule change are required to attend their assigned scheduled classes for the first three days of school.  This will allow all students to experience their courses prior to requesting a schedule change.

After the first three days of school, the process to request a schedule change will be as follows:

  • Tuesday, Sept 3rd – Thursday, Sept 5th counselors will be available for students to make appointments to discuss possible scheduling changes.  9th-grade students will have an opportunity to see their counselor either during a Directed Research period, during Guidance Seminar class, lunch block, or before and after school.
  • Following a discussion with your guidance counselor, students must complete a Schedule Change Request Form.
  • Schedule Change Request Forms must be signed by the parent/guardian to be considered complete.  All students and parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss the decision together.
  • The deadline to submit a Schedule Change Request Form is 2:30 pm on Thursday, Sept. 5th.
  • Schedule changes will be processed on Friday, Sept. 6th.  It’s important to emphasize that there is no priority given to students who see their counselors earlier in the week.  Please make sure to take your time, think through your options, and make a prudent decision.
  • There is no guarantee that a request for a schedule change will be met.  The master schedule is built upon the original course selections of our students and space is created to meet these requests.  All attempts to request a change to an individual schedule will be limited to the predetermined space available in all courses.
  • A reminder that level changes, according to our policy, can occur at any time following September 6th with the stipulation that there is space available in the course.
  • Guidance counselors will contact students after Sept. 6th to inform them of their status of their request.

The actual processing of the schedule change requests will not occur until Sept. 6th.  At that time, counselors will come together to process all change requests in an equitable manner that will go course by course and attempt to meet all requests.  If there are more requests to add a course than spaces available, a random lottery system will be used without consideration to the day or time that the student made the request.  Students unable to gain entry into the course will be placed on a waitlist based on the lottery selection.

Why this process for requesting a schedule change?
As we continue to review our policies and procedures at WHS through the lens of Challenge Success, we remain focused on reducing stress-inducing practices and continuing to increase the personalization of our school environment.  As a result, the school has developed a process for requesting schedule changes that eliminates the lines and first-come-first-served practices of the past arena-scheduling days.  This process is designed to ensure that requests to make a schedule change will be processed in an equitable manner.  Additionally, this approach is designed to reduce the stress surrounding the change process by having discussions in a more personal environment with a student’s individual guidance counselor.

Thank you all for your cooperation and once again, welcome to Wellesley High School!!
