A letter from the Nursing Department

Dear High School Parents and Guardians,

As your school nurses, we wanted to reach out to you with some important information.   Governor Baker imposed a ban on selling vape products a few months ago in response to the medical reports of lung damage associated with vaping and JUULing. This ban was lifted on 12/11/19 with some restrictions.  Despite this ban, teens have continued to vape/JUUL.

The disturbing reports of the devastating effects from vaping and JUULing continue to make the headlines. Respiratory failure, chronic lung infections and even the need for a lung transplant are just starting to surface as more research is done. While destroying lungs, vaping and JUULIng also send our children on a fast track to nicotine addiction.

The following resources are available for you to review and learn about the challenges facing teens today.  You should know that your child received an email from us as well with resources so that they can make informed decisions.  We encourage you to learn as much as you can and begin conversations with your child about the significant health risks associated with vaping.   Each week brings more information and efforts to protect our youth. Currently a new federal law is being proposed that would raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21.   Congress Resources that we have available for parents are: Vaping Resources for Parents  & Vaping Resource Video.

We have additional information and pamphlets in our offices if you need more resources or support and are here to help as we all work together to keep our children safe, healthy and well-informed.

Sincerely,

Shari Johnson, RN
Pam Sheridan, RN
Krisann Miller, RN
