Happy Friday evening to you all. I was struck the other day while driving to work that not only are the leaves changing, they’re also starting to fall! Our fall sports are already nearing the end of their regular season and we’re making plans for the senior halloween parade. It’s amazing how quickly the year is moving.
STEAM Week is coming!
The week of October 18-22, 2021 is MA STEM Week. In Wellesley, we acknowledge the importance of arts in STEM, so we are celebrating it as STEAM week.
The goal of the week is to have every student in our Wellesley Public Schools community “See yourself in STE(A)M”. The week will provide opportunities to engage in a build/design challenge, hear from professionals in a STEAM field, to work collaboratively in groups, and TO HAVE FUN!
As part of STEAM week, every student in grades pre-K-12 will be completing the same design/build challenge, which is an exciting opportunity to build community throughout all schools. Wellesley elementary schools will utilize the library and art specials to complete the STEAM week lessons. Wellesley Middle School and Wellesley High School will use their advisory periods during that week to complete the challenge.
Acatober is back!!!
Our annual fall A Cappella Concert Acatober will take place on October 22 and 23 in the Katherine L. Babson Jr. Auditorium at WHS at 7:00pm. It will be the first live performance of the year and other than graduation, the first performance with a live audience in over a year and a half. I know the kids are super excited. There is only 1/2 capacity allowed in the auditorium and families have been given the first pass at tickets and we are prioritizing tickets for family members. We do hope to be able to share some video clips of the concert after it is over.
Active Shooter Training for staff at WHS
In conjunction with our colleagues at the Wellesley Police Department we will be holding an active shooter training drill with our staff on Thursday October 21st from 2:45 to 3:30 pm. I’m letting you all know this because the drill requires no students be in the building or on the high school campus that afternoon during those times. For that single day all athletic and extracurricular activities will be pushed until after that time. There will be no in person extra help after school that single day either. I just wanted to send this out ahead of time so people have the opportunity to plan for that day.
There will be a student Active Shooter training coming too
Each year we also train our students in their own Active Shooter drill and we are still in the process of finalizing those dates. The student drill consists of watching our training video in advisory, doing a rapid exit drill from the school, and spending some time back in advisory asking questions, raising any concerns, and processing the activity. There is an opt out for students who do not want to participate. More information will be provided when the specific date and time has been decided with our partners at WPD.

Connor Darcy Documentary Film
The film was produced, edited and directed by one of our former students, Connor Cassidy (2010 grad). The documentary is being shown in a few weeks at Babson’s Sorenson Theater.
I hope you all have a relaxing weekend.
All the best,
