During Wellesley Middle school years, 8th grade students are given the choice of several electives within the visual art dept. This allows students interested in art to choose a specific art material they would like to concentrate on. For Jewelry/Metals students, they will be challenged to explore further with metal as their primary art material. Students will learn how best to construct the material with both hot and cold connections fabrication. Students are introduced to a wide range of hand tools and basic equipment to manipulate various non-ferrous metals. Students work with both sheet and wire to experiment and explore their creativity within a jewelry or small scale sculpture format of their choice. By the end of the course, students will have a strong foundation of elements and principles of art within a 3D format to bring to the next level if they so choose to continue their studies of visual art at the high school level.

Hillary Sturman received a BFA in Art Education from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University and a M.Ed. with a concentration in art from Framingham State University. She has been teaching at Wellesley Middle School since 2001. Currently she teaches 6th and 7th grade Visual Arts, and 8th grade Metals.
