Biography

A native of Philadelphia, Boston-based violist Rebecca Hallowell holds a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and went on to receive her Master of Music from Boston University College of Fine Arts. Her principal teachers include Karen Ritscher, Michelle LaCourse, and Dimitri Murrath.

An in-demand orchestral musician performing in ensembles across New England, Ms. Hallowell has also performed across the United States and Europe as a chamber musician and soloist. She is an avid proponent of the music of living composers in particular, and in addition to concertizing, she is the director of New England Conservatory’s Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP), a concert series and avant-garde seminar for conservatory-level and professional musicians.

Ms. Hallowell maintains teaching studios throughout Massachusetts for violin and viola students of all ages and levels. Her teaching emphasises comfort and power in playing, while helping students develop a robust understanding of music literacy and theory. Ms. Hallowell’s young students frequently attain top positions in competitive Boston-area youth orchestras and festivals, and continue to pursue music at the college level.
