Biography
Jacky Ho-Yin Li, an accomplished horn player, reached a significant milestone when he was
invited to perform Mozart Horn Concerto No. 4 in E-flat Major alongside Maestro Keith Lockhart
and the Boston Pops Orchestra in May 2020. Holding a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Horn
from Boston University, Jacky’s journey has been marked by remarkable achievements and a
deep commitment to music.
During his academic pursuit, Jacky had the privilege of being mentored by Professor Eric
Ruske. His dedication and passion were acknowledged through the prestigious CFA
scholarship, which provided vital support throughout his academic journey. Jacky’s commitment
to music education extended to his role as a teaching assistant in the BU Wind Brass
Percussion Department, where he shared his expertise and nurtured aspiring musicians.
As a horn soloist, Jacky earned numerous prestigious awards. Notably, he secured the coveted
Second Prize at the 2021 Busan Maru International Music Festival Concerto Competition, the
highest accolade of that year’s event. He also achieved the Platinum Prize at the Concours de
Musique Québéc 2021 and emerged as the victorious contender in the Concerto Competition at
Boston University in 2020. Jacky was one of only twelve finalists from various instruments
invited to perform at the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle. His exceptional performances in the
2022 and 2023 Frances Walton Competition further solidified his reputation as a distinguished
musician.
Jacky’s orchestral experiences have seen him perform under the baton of renowned conductors
such as Bramwell Tovey, Marin Alsop, Ken-David Masur, and others in iconic venues like
Boston Symphony Hall. He has been a valued member of orchestras like Symphony New
Hampshire, New Bedford Symphony, and more, captivating audiences with his flawless
performances.
Jacky’s talent has consistently shone through in auditions, leading to recognition as a finalist for
positions like Horn Faculty at the University of Evansville and principal horn positions in various
orchestras. He has also been sought after for positions like Assistant Principal in the Allentown
Symphony Orchestra and the 3rd Horn audition in Bangor and the Portland Symphony
Orchestra.
Prior to his doctoral studies, Jacky joined the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, refining his
skills and performing alongside world-class musicians. He has collaborated with esteemed
conductors like Christoph Eschenbach, and Trevor Pinnock, and soloists such as Yuja Wang
and Matthias Goerne.
Scholarships, including the HKSAR scholarships and the Jackie Chan Foundation scholarship,
have recognized Jacky’s exceptional abilities and dedication to his craft. He completed his
Bachelor’s Degree at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the guidance of Joe
Kirtley, which played a pivotal role in shaping his musical career.
As a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra, Jacky performed internationally under renowned
conductors and alongside celebrated artists. His freelance work with professional orchestras,
including the Macao Orchestra and Hong Kong Sinfonietta, has solidified his reputation as a
sought-after musician.
