John Ray
Biography
John Ray is a flutist, teaching artist, and freelance musician in the Greater-Boston area. He holds
a position as piccolo player and flutist with the DuBois Orchestra, a group which is committed to
presenting symphonic repertoire by under-represented composers side-by-side with music from
the traditional canon. He can also be found performing around the Greater-Boston area as a
freelance musician and with the Orchestra of the Star of the Sea in Marblehead.
Since moving to Boston in 2023, John has been active as a Teaching Artist in the Boston,
Cambridge, and Somerville public schools. He currently holds roles as a Teaching Artist at the El
Sistema program in Somerville, Community Music Center of Boston, the Margarita Muniz
Academy, and as a private flute instructor in the Wellesley public Schools. With a commitment to
honing his craft, John was a fellow for the 25’-26’ cohort of Berklee City Music’s Music
Educator and Teaching Artist (META) fellowship. As a META fellow, he collaborated with
music educators throughout Massachusetts with a focus on enhancing accessibility in music
education.
John holds a Bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in flute performance from
the Hartt School in addition to a Master’s degree in flute performance from the Longy School of
Music. His principal teachers included Janet Arms and Sooyun Kim with additional mentorship
from Randy Bowman. He has sought further refinement of his skills by performing in
masterclasses for world-renowned flutists such as Emmanuel Pahud, Michael Cox, Jeffrey
Khaner, Carol Wincenc, Judith Mendenhall, and more.
