Dear Bates Families,

I am happy to share that the first several days back to school have been very successful from our perspective.  Teachers really enjoyed starting the week by checking in with each student individually.  Since Wednesday, students and teachers have engaged in three days of remote learning.  We recognize that a full day of remote learning is quite a shift for our young learners, but we have seen students’ engagement, technology skills and stamina improve each day.   We remain mindful of the need for physical movement and screen breaks throughout the day and are working to incorporate these as needed.  As I joined classrooms over Zoom this week and witnessed the hard work of full days of remote learning, I have felt so very grateful for our teachers and proud of our students.

As we continue to optimize the experience for your child and family, we are coordinating our schedules to provide for a common lunch hour for all Bates students going forward.  If you have questions or feedback about your child’s experience, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or me.

We eagerly anticipate welcoming our students back in person in the hybrid model beginning October 1 and 2.  In preparation I will hold a Back to School meeting for Bates parents and caregivers on Thursday, September 24 at 7 p.m. over Zoom.   Bates nurse Chris Spolidoro will join me to review what to expect and answer your questions.  Please look for the Zoom link via email on Thursday morning.

Thank you for your ongoing patience and support.  I hope you enjoy a restful weekend.

Warm regards,

Toni Jolley
