Dear Bates Families,
I am writing to share important information about the upcoming Day of Play at Bates.
The Day of Play
Bates is excited to hold our Day of Play on Wednesday, February 16. For those who are not familiar with the Day of Play, please read on. For those who are, please make sure to read the information that follows about the Day of Play 2022.
What is the Day of Play?
Bates faculty and staff were inspired to start the Day of Play in 2014 after watching the documentary Caine’s Arcade, the story of a nine-year-old boy whose elaborate cardboard arcade inspired a flash mob and led to a global movement. If you have not yet seen this inspiring story and want to watch it, here is the link: Caine’s Arcade. This video tells the story of the global movement that ensued.
The Bates Day of Play is a special opportunity for students to spend the day building anything they can imagine using cardboard, recycled materials and creativity. Students will learn techniques for working with cardboard and spend time designing potential creations in art. Students may choose to work alone or with one or two classmates. Adults are available to assist with locating resources and cutting cardboard. We will encourage students to persevere and solve problems when appropriate.
Day of Play 2022
This year we have made a few changes to our Day of Play. Please note:
-
Students may bring in materials on Monday, Feb. 14 and Tuesday, Feb. 15, prior to the Day of Play.
-
Materials will be shared by all students. Please do not send in special materials for only your child’s project.
-
Please send materials in a brown paper bag. Suggested materials include:
-
small – medium boxes (no larger than a laundry basket, please)
-
paper towel tubes
-
cardboard egg cartons & cup holders
-
cardboard packaging inserts other recyclable materials
-
-
Volunteers are needed to help organize materials on the morning of February 15, from 8:30 – 10:00.
-
Volunteers are also needed to help clean up from 11:15 – 12:00 on the Day of Play, Feb. 16.
-
If you can help on either day, please email the Bates PTO at batesptomail@gmail.com.
Thank you for your help to make the Day of Play a success. If your child has questions or concerns about the Day of Play, please let your child’s teacher know. We will do all we can to support all students to fully enjoy this day.
Warmly,
Toni
