Dear Bates Families, There are many exciting events at the Bates School in the coming months. I want to provide you with some details about these happenings and invite you to join us as your schedule allows. Wednesday, November 26, 10:45 – 11:45: All School Assembly This is the first all school assembly of the year. Each grade will perform a song, and some classes will share special words of thanks. All families are invited for this performance. Note the start time has been moved up to 10:45 (from 11:00). Thursday, November 27 – Friday, November 28: No School Monday, December 1: Professional Day – No School for students Wednesday, December 10 – The Magnificent Day of Play The Bates School will participate in our own Bates version of the Cardboard Challenge, a global event inspired by the creativity of a nine year-old boy named Caine who created a cardboard arcade. In response to this boy’s inspiring story, schools and communities around the world have designated a day to creative play with cardboard and other materials. When we learned of this initiative, several teachers, our district science coordinator and several Bates parents collaborated to create plans for a unique day of play for all Bates students. You can read about this idea and watch a video by visiting: http://cainesarcade.com/dayofplay/ On The Magnificent Day of Play, students will bring science, math, art and engineering to life with their imaginations. We will first discuss the idea with students on December 2 and 3. We will start by reading a book called The Most Magnificent Thing, a story of ingenuity and perseverance. Students will plan for the day of play by creating sketches of their ideas, learning about cardboard construction and collecting materials. You can help and participate in the following ways:
- Start saving those cardboard boxes and paper towel tubes. More details about material collection will follow. Please do not send in materials before Dec. 3.
- Volunteer to help facilitate the play on Dec. 10 if your schedule allows. A sign up will follow.
Thank you in advance for your support of this amazing day. Thursday, December 11: Walk to school day Tuesday, December 23, 2:15 – 2:45: All School Community Meeting As in each of our community meetings, we will sit community style (in a big circle), sing, share some fun and highlight a Bates learning experience. All families are invited to attend this community meeting prior to winter break. Please note that community meetings are not focused on performance for an audience, but sharing and celebrating as a community. Because of this unique format, seating is limited. However, there is plenty of standing room, and we welcome you to join us. Wednesday, December 24 – Friday, January 2: No School Monday, January 5: School Reopens Thursday, January 8: Walk to school day Wednesday, January 14: All School Assembly – Ensemble Concert The fifth grade chorus, Bates orchestra and band will perform at this special winter concert. Best regards, Toni Jolley
