Hello Hunnewell Parents,
“You are exactly where you need to be!” This phrase can be life-changing when applied to challenging situations like parenting. When we say, “This isn’t working out the way I wanted, and this is exactly where I need to be,” it reminds us that everything that happens on our paths—even the confusing, scary, disappointing stuff—is an essential part of our journey, there to teach us something or humble us in some way.
As parents, we’ve all had those moments: rushing out the door only to discover a missing shoe, navigating an emotional meltdown over the “wrong” color cup, or struggling through bedtime routines that seem to stretch into eternity. Then there are those more formidable challenges—helping our children through friendship struggles, dealing with academic frustrations, or simply trying to communicate with them during a chaotic day. It’s easy to feel like we are falling short in these moments. But these messy, imperfect experiences offer the most profound lessons in patience, resilience, and love.
It also reminds us that every person’s path is different. There is no single way to raise a child. We can control how much openness we extend to ourselves along the way—how much we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, fumble, fail, and take risks with a sense of humor and affection. Maybe bedtime didn’t go as planned, or dinner was cereal and toast—those moments are okay, too. We’re all doing our best, and that is enough. As I’ve repeatedly stated, “If you have the book on parenting, please share it!”
May we all do better at allowing the full range of our experiences, even the challenging ones, to nurture us—and teach us that we are precisely where we need to be. Together, let’s embrace every stage of the journey with grace, knowing that parenting is as much about growing ourselves as it is about raising our children.
Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you for allowing us to influence your children daily. We do not take the privilege lightly.
Dare to Dream,
Mr. Dees
