Dear Bates families, I would like to thank the whole Bates community for a wonderful first year as Bates Principal. Special thanks go to our Bates parents. You have trusted us at Bates with your children and supported us each and every day. You’ve rallied to get your children to school on time, supported your child’s progress at home, and attended conferences and a number of special events to show your support for all we do. You adjusted to new car line procedures with a smile and helped us all get through this winter by sending in snow gear for five straight months. Your collective effort has been tremendous. I also want to thank the Bates PTO for providing materials and supporting so many wonderful events and programs at Bates. Thank you to the outgoing presidents Kim McCann and Evelina Taber, the amazing PTO Board and all the many PTO volunteers. You have given your precious time, creativity and resources to Bates, and we are all so very grateful. As you plan for all kinds of summer fun, please consider a summer routine that encourages students to spend a lot of time reading and some time each week doing Dreambox and writing about their summer adventures. Due to the generosity of our PTO, our subscription to Dreambox for all students will continue through next year. With a parent account, parents have the opportunity to monitor their child’s progress. Please remember to encourage lesson completion, even if lessons are difficult for your child. Our final days include several old and new traditions at Bates. At our final community meeting on Thursday we will celebrate through song, sharing new learning and a communal story. We will also say goodbye to our fifth graders and the other Bates students who will not be returning next year. The fifth graders will share with us their memories of their years at Bates, which they will present again at their graduation ceremony Thursday night. This is sure to be a highlight of both events. Finally, the whole school will say our final goodbye to the fifth graders with a “clap out” on Friday at 11:40 a.m. Students, faculty and staff will line the halls and clap for the fifth graders as they file through the school and out the front doors. Families are invited to join us to share in this special event. And while all of us plan to take some time off this summer, please check your email in mid-July and mid-August for the summer Bates Buzz letters. Also, please consider capturing a family photo over the summer to add to the Bates family album if you have not already provided a photo or if you wish to update your existing photo. Best wishes to our fifth graders and their families. Goodbye to all our Bates families that are moving on. We will miss all of you, but we also know wonderful new adventures await you. We hope you find ways to stay connected to the Bates School and come back to visit. For our returning Bates families, have a wonderful summer. We look forward to seeing you in September. Warm regards, Toni Jolley Upcoming dates: Thursday, June 18 – Fifth Grade Graduation at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 19 – Last day of school (half day for students) 11:40 a.m. Clap out for fifth graders And looking ahead to next year: Wednesday, September 2 First day of school
