Dear Bates families, I would like to thank our music teacher Beth Perry for the beautiful concert last week.  We enjoyed our students’ wonderful singing and instrumental performances.  Our third graders have become quite accomplished on the recorders. The band and orchestra also gave outstanding performances under the leadership of Julie Verret and Mary Alice McCann.  If your child is interested in learning to play a musical instrument, you can sign your child up for after school instrumental instruction through the Wellesley Public Schools in the fall.  Students can join the band or orchestra in fourth grade. The feedback I received at the Principal’s coffee in May is helping to inform our faculty’s plans and preparations for next year. In response to your feedback, we plan to:

  • provide regular opportunities for parents to learn about the curriculum and how their child is doing in school
  • create opportunities to celebrate math and learn about math in the world
  • continue to strengthen the climate at Bates

You can anticipate hearing more about our plans for next year at our Back to School night for parents in September.  Additionally, I invite interested parents to join me to discuss these topics and more at my first Principal’s coffee in the fall.  As always, I welcome your feedback at any time. Plans for next year include some upcoming changes to our Bates faculty.  Bates kindergarten teacher Mary McMahon and literacy specialist Megan Reilly-Padilla will be leaving Bates for new and different experiences.  We wish them the very best in their future endeavors.  In addition, we wish the best for Katherine Greene, our fifth grade music teacher, who is expecting a child in September and will not be returning to the Bates School.  Please be aware of new guidelines for footwear for students at school.  Flip flops are problematic at school for a number of reasons, so thank you for not sending your child to school in flip flops.  Please send your child to school in footwear such as sneakers, sandals or other sturdy shoes.  Please note that the school year will conclude with a half-day of school on Friday, June 19. Wednesday, June 17 will be a full day of school for all students.  Students will bring home final progress reports in backpacks on Friday, June 19. Finally, it’s not too early to mark your calendars for the first day of the new school year, Wednesday, September 2.   Please feel free to contact me or the Bates office with any questions about this year or next.  Warm regards, Toni Jolley Upcoming dates: Tuesday, June 9 –                  Field Day Thursday, June 11 –              Walk to School Day                                                Rain date Field Day Friday, June 12                      Last day of BOKS Wednesday, June 17 –          Full day of school for all students                                               Bates picnic 5 p.m. Thursday, June 18-               Fifth Grade Graduation at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 19 –                   Last day of school (half day for students) And looking ahead to next year: Wednesday, September 2    First day of school (half day)
