Dear Bates families,

Happy first week of May. Yesterday we came together as a whole school community for another Community Meeting. We sang “Happy Birthday, World” to celebrate Earth Day and shared the book Maddi’s Fridge as part of a challenge to broaden our students’ reading horizons called Reading Without Walls. We were also visited by the WHS jazz combo. The students loved this informative performance and learned about the art of jazz improvisation.

Because your child’s safety is our primary concern, if your child rides a bike or scooter to school, please review our bike safety protocol with your child:

  1. Always wear your helmet.
  2. Get off your bike and walk your bike/scooter on side walks and across cross walks.
  3. Do no ride your bike/scooter through the parking lot.

In addition, I ask your help with our visitor protocol. When visiting the school please ring the bell at the front door and state your name and reason for visit. Although we recognize our Bates families, it is important that we have a consistent response to all visitors. Once inside please come into the office to sign in and receive a visitor’s pass. Thank you.

I am very pleased to share the news that the security package proposed for security upgrades at Bates and other school was recently approved at Town Meeting. We look forward to work on the Bates upgrades beginning this summer. As part of our ongoing attention to safety across the district, on Wednesday the senior administrative staff of WPS, in addition to head custodians and building secretaries, met for the afternoon to practice routine safety drills. We collaborated with the Wellesley Police Department to standardize our safety protocols and procedures across the ten school settings.
