Dear Bates Families,

We had a strong start to MCAS testing with our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders completing two days of English Language Arts testing this week.  Our students showed excellent effort on this rigorous test!  They also greatly enjoyed their MCAS bootcamp with Mrs. Fyvie and staff on each of the mornings of their testing.

We held our monthly Community Meeting this week, which highlighted the upcoming Mini-Marathon.  METCO Director Dr. Kalise Wornum joined us to thank students in advance for their Mini-Marathon fundraising to support the METCO program.  The Bates community is proud to support the METCO program.  In addition, we sang a song called “Everybody Loves Saturday Night.”  Over the last few weeks Mrs. Perry invited students to take this song home and translate it into other languages their family may speak.  Students enthusiastically responded and helped us to translate this song into 16 different languages!  Thank you to those family members who helped with this community project.  Finally, we were visited by our Bates mascot, Tux the Penguin, and Green Team members Susan Zelenko and Anni Andersen who announced that Bates has “adopted” an Emperor Penguin.  The students are excited to name and learn more about our very own penguin.

As a reminder, next week I will be holding two parent coffees to discuss our upcoming safety training with students.  Please join me on Monday, April 9 at 6:00 p.m or Thursday, April 12 at 8:30 a.m. in the Bates library if you would like to be a part of this discussion.

Have a great weekend!

Warm regards,

Toni Jolley
