Dear HunneBates,

Happy November!  HunneBates enjoyed a busy week.  In addition to the excitement of the Halloween parade and the extra half day of school, students were engaged in much learning.  Fifth graders were hard at work wrapping up a unit on writing literary essays and our kindergarteners celebrated their first piece of “published” writing with a very joyful “marching parade” for students and staff in the primary wing.  Kindergarteners held up their stories for all to admire and were very proud of their hard work!  These are great examples of the power of joy, audience and purpose in the writing process.

It was also great to see families and teachers coming together for the very important fall conference.  I hope you found your conference(s) to be insightful and rewarding.  We greatly value our collaboration with families.

This week I need to remind all members of our community to observe parking and traffic guidelines while driving and parking near Bates.  In particular:

  • Avoid blocking driveways at all times, even while waiting in the car line.

  • Do not turn around in driveways or in the middle of Westgate Road to approach the school.  Instead, make a quick loop around the neighborhood if you need to turn around.

  • Use only the front loop to drop off students.  Cars should not stop prior to the loop.

These Bates traffic guidelines have been established for the safety of our students and all in our community.  Please review our expectations with all caregivers and family members who may be driving to Bates.  It’s important that we work together to support the safety of all in our community.

With the arrival of cooler temperatures, please anticipate that more cars will be using the car line in the morning and afternoon.  In order to arrive on time for school, please plan for an earlier start if you are driving. As a reminder, we ask all students to enter the building prior to 8:30 in order to be ready for an on time start to their day.

Enjoy the extra hour of sleep this weekend with the end of Daylight Savings Time. Looking ahead to next week, there is no school on Friday, November 10 in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Warmly,

Toni Jolley
