“Honor the leap as well as the landing.” Shannon Donavan-Monti Fiske Families, Welcome October! It is always sad to see the last days of summer pass but the colors of fall are beautiful. This is a great time of year to enjoy the outdoors and maybe even pick some apples. My family and I are traveling up to Vermont this weekend to spend some quality time with our grandfather, aunts, uncles and cousins. Today we had a wonderful assembly about our Fantastic Elastic Brain! Our time together was spent exploring how our brain grows when we try new things and stretch our thinking. Students enjoyed a video about the power of “yet” and a second video that showed how Fiske students stretch their thinking every day. Fun was had by all. A Note From our School Psychologist Often when tragic events happen, children have questions. The events in Oregon have not been discussed in school. Our school psychologist, Sharon Grossman, has provided parents and guardians with some talking points should your child ask questions at home. This resource is attached to this email. Our thoughts go out to the Oregon Community College families. From the Fitness and Health Desk Walk to school days will be held the second Wednesday of each month. This program will begin on Wednesday, October 7th at 8:15 a.m. When students arrive at school, walkers will sign their names on the sheets posted by the front door and will be given stickers. The class with the most walkers will win the golden sneaker for a month and a free 30 minute Fitness and Health class! Teachers can increase their students’ chances of winning by walking with us at 8 a.m. or signing in if they went to the gym that morning. Our Health and Fitness teacher, Christina Gerst, has requested that three notices go home to parents regarding a Fiske costume drive, Jump Rope Club, and rollerblading. These notices are attached to this email. BOKS is Coming! BOKS is Coming! BOKS is Coming! BOKS is Coming! The PTO is thrilled to announce that BOKS will be coming back to Fiske. Why are we so excited? Brain research says that our brains are activated by aerobic movement. In the book Spark by Dr. John Ratey, the author reviews many studies that show student achievement and behavior are both improved by aerobic exercise. What better way to start our Tuesday and Thursday mornings than with movement and nutritional tips! BOKS will be held from 7:30-8:15 a.m. Permission slips will be sent home next week. The BOKS program can not run without parent, guardian, and teacher volunteers. Jennifer Bonniwell has volunteered to lead this program. Please email Jennifer at phillybrown@aol.com if you are interested in volunteering for BOKS. An amazing part of the BOKS program is the training and support that is provided by BOKS. Volunteer parents, guardians, and teachers are invited to attend a training session at the BOKS complex in Canton on October 21st, from 4:00-8:00. This is three hours of fun packed training. If you can not attend this training, there are two more scheduled for October 20th, from 10-2 p.m. and December 10th, from 4-8 p.m. For more information visit the BOKS website. Please consider volunteering for this amazing program that builds both the social and academic growth of our students. PTO News Wednesday night the PTO held the first meeting of the year. It was a huge success with lots of new and exciting ideas. Thank you to Co-presidents, Jay Staunton and Harp Bedi, for hosting this meeting and generating some wonderful conversations. The next PTO meeting will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 6:30 p.m. Please join us for another informative meeting. If you are not receiving the PTO Monday Memo it may mean that the PTO does not have your email. The school can not share your email with the PTO unless you have given permission via the Powerschool Parent Portal. The Parent Portal is closed at this time, so please send your email directly to the room parent. Creative Arts Council News The Creative Arts Council provides curriculum enrichment programs for our Fiske students.
