Fiske Families,

There are a lot of amazing things happening at Fiske these days! Yesterday the fifth grade presented the Buddy Bench expectations to grades 3-5. Today the fourth grade presented an all school assembly on mindfulness. One of our goals at Fiske is for all children to feel they have a voice in their school community. This year each grade level will prepare an assembly for our students. These assemblies are focused on the Fiske Fundamentals, mindfulness, community and Growth Mindset. These topics are at the core of our Fiske community. It is wonderful to see how the children present these ideas to their peers and highlight what is important to them as members of our community.

What is a Buddy Bench you ask? The Buddy Bench was given by the Fiske Fifth Grade class of 2016 for the intermediate playground. A Buddy Bench is a place to sit when you are having trouble finding something to do, or do not have someone to play with. When you sit on the bench, other children will come and invite you to play with them. The Fifth grade explained the rules of the Buddy Bench to grades 3-5. The bench is now out on the playground and already being used.

What is Mindfulness? Our fourth grade friends reminded us today that mindfulness is a state of calm, peace and enjoying the small moments in life. Practicing mindfulness is a way to calm down, concentrate and create a sense of well being. The book What Does it Mean To be Present by Rana DiOrio was read to the entire school and is a wonderful reminder of how we can practice mindfulness.

You are invited!!!

You are invited to attend the Grade Four music assembly, Escape to Freedom, on Friday, February 3 at 8:45 a.m. in the Fiske Gym. Escape to Freedom is based on the book Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jeanette Winters. We have invited Kalise Wornum, K-12 METCO Director to be our narrator. At the conclusion of the program, Kalise will be presenting our school with a commemorative 50th METCO Anniversary banner.
