Dear Fiske Families,

We have lots of reading fun planned for next week!

  • The Fiske PTO is hosting a new book fair from Monday, March 20th-Thursday, March 23rd. Proceeds will support our Fiske library. There will be a variety of books including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Children will attend the book fair during their regularly scheduled library class. Book purchases can also be made during the Fiske Reads event. We are in need of many volunteers to make this book fair a successful event. Please consider volunteering for a 1 hour shift on this sign up genius link. Thank you http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f49afaf29a6f58-fiske.

  • On Wednesday, March 22nd, during the school day, Fiske students and staff will be celebrating A Day of Reading! Students will spend the day engaged in reading activities: reading alone, reading with a partner, or listening to a story. To make this even more fun we are encouraging all staff and students to dress as their favorite book character!

  • On the evening of Wednesday, March 22nd from 6:00-7:30 p.m. we are inviting all Fiske families to join us in celebrating the diversity of our community through books. Families will have the opportunity to hear our celebrity readers read multicultural books in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Vietnamese, visit teachers hosting reading displays in the gym and purchase books at our book fair. The book fair will be opening at 5:30 p.m. This is sure to be an exciting night for all!

Wellesley Education Foundation (WEF) presents Catherine Steiner-Adair — THE BIG DISCONNECT: Protecting Childhood & Family Relationships in the Digital Age

Tuesday, March 21, 7:00 p.m. in the WHS Auditorium

Please join us on March 21st for an engaging evening with Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair! Through presentation and skits, Dr. Steiner-Adair will help parents understand the ways in which technology and media are putting children at risk at each stage of development, from infancy through young adulthood, and challenging what it means to be a family.

Drawing on real life stories from her clinical work with children and families and her consulting work with educators and experts across the country, Dr. Steiner-Adair offers insights and advice that can help parents achieve greater understanding, authority and confidence as they come up against the tech revolution that is unfolding in their living room.

The evening will also feature WHS students performing role-play scenarios all too familiar with parents/guardians:

Snapchat Meltdown

The Disconnected Parent

But I need my phone and iPad because… “I’m doing my homework!”

Attendees will learn skills to distinguish between educational, healthy and unhealthy use, and practical strategies for nourishing deep attention, creativity, empathy and meaningful relationships. There will be a book signing of “The Big Disconnect” by Dr. Steiner-Adair after the event.
