Notes from Ms. Verret

The music room is really hopping these days!

• K’s are learning beat and movement games.

• Grade 1 is reviewing a folk dance and expanding their solfege skills

• Grade 2 is dancing and learning a two-part rhythm poem.

• Grade 3 was introduced to the recorder, and are really excited to start a year of learning to play an instrument and learning to read music.

• Grade 4 learned to play a four-part piece with xylophones, claves, and glockenspiels.

• Grade 5 has had their first chorus rehearsal, reviewed two dances, and is learning about ostinato patterns and how to play them.

In addition, children in grade 2-5 attended the annual Instrument Demonstration. After-School lesson teachers came and performed flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and bass. Student can sign up to take lessons on these instruments. The goal is for students to enter band and orchestra.

If you’re child is interested in learning to play one of these instruments, there is a registration event at the middle school on Tuesday, September 19 from 6:00-7:30. At that event, you can meet the teachers, sign your child up for a lesson day/time, and rent an instrument. One stop shopping!!! If you have questions about this program, feel free to contact me or check out the Performing Arts Department website.

Insider’s Guide to Fiske

The Insider’s Guide to Fiske is now on our Fiske website! This resource, along with many others, can be found on the Fiske Website: https://wellesleyps.org/fiske/back-to-school-packet/ . Please take a moment to review this document for information on arrival and dismissals, lunches, health guidelines and other important information. The Wellesley Public Schools also has a Student Handbook K-5 that can be found at: https://wellesleyps.org/ under the “Student and Families” tab. Please do not hesitate to call ( 781-446-6275) or email (mcgregorr@wellesleyps.org) me with any questions you may have.

Car Line

The afternoon car line takes approximately 10 minutes from beginning to end. To keep all safe it is imperative for parents/guardians to stay in their car and have children enter the car through the curbside door. Do not for any reason pass or pull around cars in carline as this compromises the safety for students getting in cars and staff directing cars. To expedite the car line, put the carline signs that were sent home last week in the right corner of your front window. If we all follow the car line rules then we will all arrive and leave school safely.

We are looking for two new School Council parent members

Site-Based Councils were mandated by the Education Reform Act of 1993 as part of the Act’s decentralization of decision-making. The Fiske School Council is composed of equal members of elected teachers and parents, together with the Principal and a community member. Members serve for two-year terms. The role of the Fiske School Council is to advise the Principal, especially in creating and evaluating the School Improvement Plan. The School Council meets several times during the school year. Minutes of all meetings are published on the Fiske website.

The Fiske School Council currently has three parent representatives; Kenneth Largess, Danielle Nixon and Priya Datta. We are looking for two more parents to join the School Council. If you would like to nominate yourself, or a friend, please contact PTO President Manisha Varma at atulandmanisha. The PTO will run an election for interested parties during back to school night on Wednesday, September 13th.

Recycling at Fiske

Last year, in conjunction with the Fiske Green team and the Fiske staff, the Fiske students started a lunch recycling program. Children placed trash and recyclables in the respective containers after eating their lunch.

Our Kindergarteners will begin this program on Monday, September 11th. We are looking for parent volunteers to help the Kindergarteners learn the recycling procedures. Please consider volunteering for a 20 minute lunch session to help with this exciting program. Volunteers must have a current CORI form on file.
