Our Halloween parade weaved its way through the Fiske neighborhood on Friday morning. Everything from “minion” characters that starred in the movie Despicable Me to a brightly lighted jellyfish. Thanks to all the families that made sure students were in costume to start the day and had bags to store their costumes for safekeeping.
In case you’re wondering I walked my neighborhood with my five-year-old daughter dressed as Queen Elisa and my 10-year-old son, a zombie –monkey. They were quite a pair!
A few weeks ago I put out a call for parents to volunteer for School Council and have heard back from two. I have an opening for one additional parent, so please feel free to email me back if you’re interested. The commitment is one School Council meeting a month on Wednesday afternoons. I am trying to schedule a meeting on November 12 to get us started.
As we are in full swing with parent/teacher conferences, I’m sure you’re receiving important information about your child’s learning at Fiske this school year. I am happy to report that Fiske staff members take great efforts getting to know your child as a learner and a person. Staff also spends many hours preparing for parent/teacher conferences and progress reports to provide you with the most comprehensive information on your child’s learning. This can include everything from the formal, standardized tests like MCAS to more informal observations about your child’s feelings. I am in awe of these preparations and the care staff takes in teaching your child each day.
Traffic in and around the Fiske neighborhood is on the minds of several families, especially the Cedar, Hunnewell, Hastings and McLean Streets intersection. Parents Neil Siskind and Bharat Talwar have met with me, town officers and elected officials to discuss how dangerous this intersection can be when students walk to and from Fiske. Mr. Siskind and Mr. Talwar will be stating the case for greater safety measures at this intersection at a Traffic Committee Meeting on December 3, 2014 at 7:30 pm at a location to be determined. If you’d like to get involved Mr. Talwar can be reached by email at btalwar@gmail.com
Finally, I want to say, “Thank you,” to our neighbors the Wonzys, who donated an extra refrigerator to our teacher’s room. It is a welcome addition to our school, as our staff has outgrown our current one. This reminds me, if any family is renovating and looking to donate a dishwasher, we have a need. I thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Anthony J. Colannino
