Hello Hardy Families,
Welcome back to our returning and new families of the Hardy community! The entire Hardy community is looking forward to meeting and getting to know you. We are so excited to start the 2018/2019 school year. The entire staff has been busy preparing the school and classrooms for the new academic year. We look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday, Aug. 29th. Remember, this is a Wednesday so it is a half day with a 12:00 p.m. dismissal time. Kindergarten students will continue to be on a half day schedule with their first full day being Tuesday, Sept. 11th.
On the first day of school all students, grades K to 5 will go directly to their classrooms between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. We will not have a before school recess from 8:15 to 8:30. This will allow all of our students and parents time to familiarize themselves with the location of their classrooms and meet their new classmates and teachers.
The Hardy School Insiders’ Guide is available on our web page along with the district wide Elementary Handbook. In the Insiders’ Guide you can learn about procedures and information specific to Hardy regarding the day-to-day operations and routines. In the meantime, I have listed a few key points you may want to know before the start of the school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call or email me.
Using the WPS district online platform PowerSchool, all parents will need to log onto the Parent Portal between August 6th to 31st to update and complete forms for each child, https://wellelsey.powerschool.com. Once you complete this entry for each child you will be able to access the homeroom information. Given security and privacy laws we no longer send out class lists (see MGL 603 CMR 23.00 for more information.)
PowerSchool Parent Portal Instructions: Aug. 6th to Aug. 31st.
Log into the portal at https://wellelsey.powerschool.com
Click the “Annual Update” icon
Make changes and click “Submit” at the bottom of each page. Even if changes are not necessary, please log in and click “Submit” in order to update your account for the upcoming school year.
The fourth page will include the homeroom information for your child.
Follow this procedure for each child.
I am looking forward to another wonderful year at Hardy!
Sincerely,
Charlene Cook
A few notes about returning to school…
First day is a half-day: Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018. Dismissal time is noon.
School Instructional time starts at 8:30: Students should be in the building and entering their classrooms at 8:30. Therefore, try to make sure your child is here at school no later than 8:25 a.m. so they can begin their day on time.
First day arrival procedures: All students will report directly to their classrooms on the first day of school. After that they will gather on the blacktop just before entering the building.
Walker arrival: Students who walk to school should be sure to use the crosswalks and not enter the playground through the parking lot.
Walker dismissal and pick up: If you want to meet your child at dismissal please meet them near the RISE bench grass area. Students will be dismissed through doors leading to that section of the school. There is a teacher to guardian direct hand-off at walker pickup for grades K to 2. Therefore, if a guardian is not present at pickup, students will return to the office and wait for their guardian to arrive.
Arrival and departure by car: The following rules and regulations were developed for the sole purpose of ensuring the safety of children. Your cooperation is essential.
Morning Drop-off: You may drop off your child between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. in the horseshoe drive on Hardy Road. During morning arrival, it is recommended that parents consider the horseshoe area as the “live” drop off area where parents remain in their vehicles and children disembark independently. Please teach your child how to unbuckle his/her seat belt.
All doors are locked at 8:30 a.m. If you arrive late you will need to park in the “loop” in front of the school and escort your child to the office.
Afternoon Pick-Up: You may pick up your child in the horseshoe drive on Hardy Road at 3:05 p.m. Identification cards will be given to students on the first day of school to place on your dashboard. Follow the line of traffic down Hardy Road, around the circle and along the building. When you reach the sidewalk area parallel to the building, your child may load into your vehicle. Thank you for working with younger children to become familiar with the look of the car that will be picking them up.
Please do NOT leave or park your car in the faculty parking lot during arrival (8:15-8:45) or dismissal (2:45-3:15) times. Please do not use the faculty lot as a drop-off area.
If you would like to meet your child on the grassy area outside the gym and escort him/her to your car, you may wish to park on Lafayette Circle (across Weston Road) or on Hickory or Lawrence Roads (abutting the playground). If you park on one of these streets, be courteous of the residents: park on one side of the street only and be careful not to drive on the grass. Do not turn in private driveways. Please use the crossing guard when crossing Weston Road.
If your plans for dismissal change, please write a note to the classroom teacher. If this change occurs after your child is in school, please call the office. The school secretary will make sure your child’s teacher knows of the change. Be sure to let your child’s teacher know how they will be dismissed on the first day.
Before school program: Hardy has supervised before school care from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. at a cost of $270.00 per semester. Please contact the school secretary for more information.
Recess and lunch schedule:
Grades 2 and 3: 11:25 to 12:05
Grades 1 and 4: 11:50 to 12:30
Grades K and 5: 12:15 to 12:55
Food in the classrooms: The Hardy School Council developed new guidelines to address food in the classrooms. This will help to protect students with dietary restrictions and allergies. Food will no longer be brought in for classroom or school celebrations. Food items that can be brought in are for individual student snacks only. If your child has a food allergy be sure to notify the nurse and the teacher.

Emails:
To email WPS staff: use the last name and first initial of the staff person @wellesleyps.org. Occasionally, there are duplicate last name and first initials so watch out for that. Mine is one of those so you will have to use the first two letters of my first name: cookch@wellesleyps.org. Staff emails can be found on the website.
Hardy Web Page:
Access our webpage for school and classroom events: https://wellelseyps.org/hardy
VERY IMPORTANT:
Please print, complete and send this DISMISSAL PLAN form with your child on the first day of school. You might also be asked by your child’s teacher to complete a similar sheet. It is critical that the office and your child’s teacher know HOW your child is dismissed each day and WHO is responsible for picking them up.
Please ask your child to deliver this form to his/her teacher on the first day of school. Indicate how your child will be dismissed at the end of each day by placing a check in the appropriate box. Your child will go home following this plan unless you have sent in a note or have verbal confirmation of the change from the school secretary.
