Hello Hardy families,

Highlight from the past week:
On Friday, students and staff were invited to dress up like their favorite book, movie, or tv character. This spirit day made for a joyous day at Hardy!

A few 1st graders, 5th graders, and Principal Smith
got into the spirit with their Harry Potter costumes!

Asian American and Pacific Islander Month:
This month, Hardy is celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Month. Our school librarian, Ms. Sheehan provided the following summary of how we are recognizing this date with our students:
April is Asian American and Pacific Islander month, a time to honor and celebrate the people and cultures from Asian and Pacific Island countries. In our library classes this has taken the form of “traveling” (through books!) across different Asian and Pacific Island nations. Along the way we are exploring and wondering about interesting things such as:
– Asia is actually made up of 48 different countries – all with their own cultures, customs, foods and languages, from South Korea to Pakistan, India to Japan, China to Iran.
– There are many island nations in Asia, including Taiwan, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia.
– The country of Japan is made up of over 6,000 islands. Indonesia has over 17,000!
– Some of our Hardy friends have excitedly shared some of their family connections to Asia and the Pacific Islands.

In our first two weeks we have visited places like Vietnam in My First Day, Hawaii in Ohana Means Family, Afghanistan in The Library Bus, Thailand in The Floating Field, — and more! Ask your child to tell you about one of them! We will continue to explore Asia and the Pacific Islands in more book shares over the rest of May. Many of these books can be found in the Hardy library and also on Epic.

This year our Library classes have been very different, but we’ve used the opportunity to share wonderful books and stories about amazing and inspirational people and places. Next month I’ll be sharing with Hardy families ALL the diverse books we’ve shared throughout our year.

Happy Reading!

Water Rockets program – 2L bottles needed:
Hardy will be ending this school year with a blast! In June, all students grades K-5 will get to participate in building and launching their own water bottle rocket. We need over 200 empty, clean plastic 2-liter bottles for this fun and educational activity. Please save and wash plastic 2-liter bottles at home and send them in with your child to give to their classroom teacher by Friday, May 28th. Thank you for your help with this.

Have a great week!

Respectfully yours,
Grant Smith
Principal
