Dear Hunnewell,

We have an opportunity to view, a solar eclipse, a rare scientific phenomenon together at Hunnewell on Monday, April 8th, right at and after dismissal, and our PTO has generously donated glasses for this to happen!  Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am hoping the weather cooperates and this is one of those moments when fifty years from now, our children tell their children, “I remember seeing my first solar eclipse at Hunnewell, my elementary school.”

This week the teachers will show the students how to wear the glasses properly and many have shown the slideshow that was provided by our K-5 Science Director, Lisa Fox. This slide deck provides a brief overview on what a solar eclipse is.

Parents, if you are able to join us on the blacktop and front plaza, at the south end of the school, which is the area closest to the playground, please do!! It is critical that you do let us know of any change that your attendance at the viewing has on your child’s dismissal plans through PUP on Monday! I will work with Dean to mark a safe viewing area.

The teachers will give the students their glasses at 2:45. WCCC students, bus students and car-line students will proceed as usual to the front lobby, and we will get all of these students to the cafeteria, bus or car-line, respectively. They will have their glasses though, so if you are not able to join us, hopefully they can catch the tail end of it at home. The K-5 teachers will lead their students through the exit at the south entrance (near the blacktop) at 3PM. Parents please plan on collecting your child from their teacher by 3:05. Fourth and fifth graders do not have to stay, but we will encourage them to watch the eclipse from the plaza if you are not able to join us.

This is an exciting opportunity for us to experience this phenomenon together, and we will invite WCCC students to join us.

Thank you again to the generous donation of the PTO for the glasses.

Sincerely,

Ellen
