Dear HunneBates,

Happy New Year!  I hope your year is off to a wonderful start.  It’s been great to see students back to school this week.  With the snow falling this very afternoon, I’d like to remind families to please send students to school prepared for outdoor play throughout the winter.  When there is snow on the ground, students need to wear boots and snow pants in order to play in it.  Without the proper attire we ask that students play on the blacktop areas that are cleared.  Finally, please label all of your child’s outerwear, including hats and gloves.  Thank you.

School Committee Conversation

The Wellesley School Committee will be available for a virtual conversation with Bates families on January 12 from 1:30 – 2:30. This will be an informal discussion with members of the School Committee regarding current School Committee activities as well as an opportunity for Q&A with attendees.  Here is the Zoom link:  https://wellesleyps.zoom.us/j/87322138943

Literacy Webinar January 18

If you did not have a chance to attend one of the recent literacy morning coffees and you would like to learn more about our elementary literacy program, please join us for an evening webinar on January 18 from 7:00-8:00 pm. The webinar will cover the same information as the morning coffees. You will hear from elementary principals, literacy specialists and the department head for elementary ELA about our literacy instruction and curriculum. After a brief presentation, there will be time for answering questions. If you would like to submit a question for the webinar, please fill out this form. If you need the form translated, please let me know. The zoom link will be shared prior to the event.

Magnificent Day of Play on January 25

Please mark your calendars for the HunneBates Magnificent Day of Play on January 25 from 8:30 – 12:00.  The Day of Play is a tradition that was inspired by the documentary Caine’s Arcade, the story of a nine-year-old boy whose cardboard arcade excited the world.  If you have not yet seen this short film, I recommend you watch it: Caine’s Arcade.  On the Magnificent Day of Play HunneBates students will spend the entire morning building anything they can imagine using cardboard, recycled materials and their creativity.  Families play an important role in the Day of Play.  First, families can collect materials for students to use, such as cardboard boxes, recyclable containers and materials to bring into school starting Monday, January 23.  Students will begin to plan possible creations in school the week of January 16.  Please note: materials will be shared within classrooms and project size is limited to what can sit on top of a student desk.  Second, we need many volunteers to help make the Day of Play a success.  If you are able to help, please use this form to sign up.  Thank you.

Finally, our student emergency drill with the WPD has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 17.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Warmly,

Toni Jolley
