Dear Sprague Community, I hope many of you will be able to come to hear Jessica Minahan speak tonight. She is knowledgeable and entertaining at the same time. Many thanks to our PTO for sponsoring this parent event. As we march through March, we begin to plan for next year. Our Spanish language program in grades K-2 has been very successful so far this year. As we look forward, the budget will allow us to add Spanish classes in grade 3 for the 2016-2017 school year. Ms. Peare, our Spanish teacher is actually giving a presentation to the School Committee tonight so they can see the great work that has happened in our pilot. We know that learning another language helps students’ brain development, which in turn, helps them to be successful learners in all areas. One of the features that makes our program so strong and unique is the fact that the curriculum in Spanish has been tailored to match up with grade level curriculum in Wellesley. We call this “content-enriched” language instruction. This provides a more challenging level of cognitive demand than merely learning colors and numbers in another language. Parents of students in grades K-2 have been signing up to be “Parent of the Day.” The “Parent of the Day” comes to class and participates along with students. Senorita Peare is clear…the parent should expect to participate and may be called on in class! Look for after school club offerings in next week’s note!   Dates to remember: March 22: Jessica Minahan-author talk at 7 PM in the library March 23: Parent Conferences by appointment March 25: No school March 28, 29, 30: Grade 3 ELA MCAS March 30: Parent Conferences March 31, April 1, 4: Grade 5 ELA MCAS April 5: Walk to School Day April 5: Parent Conferences (12:00 dismissal on Tuesday) April 6: Parent Conferences April 7: Grade 5 Basketball Game at WMS April 7, 8, 11: Grade 4 ELA MCAS April 13: Multicultural Night
