Hello Hardy Families

Bus Safety Drill:

All of our students participated in a safety bus evacuation drill Thursday. The purpose of this activity is to explain to the children how they should behave on the bus. They also have an opportunity to evacuate the bus following the instructions of the bus driver. The importance and use of seatbelts was discussed and we appreciate your encouragement and reminders about this too. Helpful RISE bus behaviors you can talk about with your child include:

  • Follow RISE at all times
  • Stay in the same seat the entire time
  • Keep your buckle on until you get to your stop
  • Keep your hands to yourself
  • No eating or drinking on the bus
  • Keep your belongings in your backpack
  • Encourage kindergarten and 1st graders to sit in the front half of the bus

Auction Parking Spots:

You may notice that we posted signs for our Auction Winners at the front of the car line and in a space in the parking lot. If you are interested in one of these you will have a chance to win one at the Hardy spring auction.

MCAS:

MCAS scores have been released to the public and will be mailed out to parents in Wellesley on Tuesday, Oct. 4th. If you have any questions regarding the interpretation of these scores contact your child’s teacher. The district as a whole continues to do exceptionally well. Hardy also continues to do exceptionally well compared to the state and compared to other schools within Wellesley. You can access information regarding how Wellesley and Hardy has performed on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) website:

Morning Building Entry:

Our morning entry procedures were adjusted this week to increase the level of structure and safety. I am so proud of the way our students have responded and have shown exceptional Hardy RISE behavior as they enter the building in the morning. We encourage our students to walk in quickly, quietly and safely at all times and they have certainly been doing just that!

Walker Pick Up Area:

If you are picking up your child and walking them home you should wait for them on the grass area outside the gym doors on the upper level. We hope that this will increase the structure and level of safety for our walkers and our car pick up areas.

Recreation Department:

I have connected with the Wellesley Recreation Department so that Hardy students can take classes here at Hardy after school at a cost. You will be receiving information from them about two classes. The first is a “Home Alone” one-session class for students in grades 4 and 5 with dates in December. The other class will be a coding class with multiple classes over a few months beginning in October. There will be two versions, one for students in grades K and 1 and the other for grades 2 through 5. Stay tuned…

School Council:

Our first School Council meeting will take place on Thursday, October 13th from 7:45 to 8:30 in my office. All are welcome.

Recommended Books:

During the Back to School Night I mentioned a couple of books that Hardy and district staff have read and I highly recommend them:

  • Creative Schools by Ken Robinson
  • Grit, The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth
  • Mindset, by Carol Dweck

Have a wonderful long weekend!
