Schofield School
Go Hawks
Dear Schofield Families,
There is so much excitement in the air for the Schofield Halloween Dance tonight! Thank you to the PTO for all of their planning to make this spooktacular community event happen. Please remember to take pictures of your ghosts and goblins this evening and send them to the yearbook committee at schofieldyearbook24@gmail.com.
Thank you to all of the families who helped with the Campus Clean Up last Saturday. Families spread mulch, raked leaves, picked up trash and trimmed shrubs. Schofield looks beautiful!
Red, Orange, Yellow – Oh My!
Several years ago, in an effort to provide students with common expectations and reduce incidents of bullying, the faculty at Schofield read the book, Schools Where Everyone Belongs: Practical Strategies for Reducing Bullying. This past spring, Schofield teacher leaders held a refresher workshop for all staff so that we could get back to utilizing common language and a consistent response when students make an unexpected choice. We use the red, orange and yellow forms to provide students with an opportunity to own their behavior, reflect and make a plan to do better next time. In an effort to provide clarity and consistency, teachers shared this with parents at Back-to-School Night so please reach out to them or me if you have any questions.
As ironic as it sounds, we expect students to make unexpected choices. San Francisco–based sociologist Christine Carter, Ph.D., author of Raising Happiness wrote, “If you correct their mistakes and solve their problems, kids never learn how to do it themselves. They need to “blow it” every once in a while—and suffer the consequences. It lets them see that goof-ups aren’t the end of the world and that they can figure out how to fix them.” Our job as educators and parents is to help them do this, especially when they are young and the stakes are low.
As many of you know, I am also a parent and my kids are far from perfect. I have to frequently remind myself that “saving them” (our natural inclination as a parent) does not serve them well in the long run.
PickUp Patrol:
Please be sure to update your child’s plan in PickUp Patrol. It’s especially helpful when parents review the after-school plans with younger kids before dropping off each morning. This will hopefully reduce confusion and the need for phone calls home at dismissal. Thank you!
Parent/Teacher Conferences:
Parent/Teacher Conferences begin next week. We look forward to sharing about your child’s strengths and areas for growth, both academic and social/emotional. In case you missed it, this important memo about our K-3 Early Literacy Screener was sent to K-3 families earlier this week.
It looks like a rainy weekend ahead. I will be getting my umbrella ready for the soccer, football and soccer games we have lined up Saturday and Sunday. I hope you stay dry and enjoy the weekend.
Sincerely,
Jordan
