Dear Upham Community,
I hope that you are well and things are running as smoothly at home as they are running at Upham. The students are working through their routines and procedures and I see many smiles throughout the day.
Mrs. Habib (Spanish/FLES teacher) started her classes this week and our Spanish/FLES program is moving forward nicely.
Throughout last year a committee of teachers and administrators worked on developing a new standards-based report card. I wanted to share some of the work they have completed. Understand that the new report card is a much-needed change in assessing your children. Additionally, it is important to understand that we will be making adjustments as we move forward with the document.
What is a Standards-Based Report Card?
The purpose of a report card is to clearly and objectively communicate how a child is doing in school. A standards-based report card (SBRC) tells specifically how a child is performing based on grade-level standards listed and indicates what areas may need additional attention. All teachers at a grade level measure student learning against a consistent set of academic criteria.
What is the goal of the Standards-Based Report Card?
Clearly communicate student progress and performance toward Massachusetts grade-level standards and expectations to both students and families.
Where do the standards come from?
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has grade-level standards in all subject areas. WPS’ curriculum aligns to these standards. Details about these state standards can be found at http://www.doe.mass.edu/frameworks/current.html.
How will the students be assessed?
There are Performance Indicators (listed below) that represent a student’s progress on the report card.
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Students are assessed using the end-of-year grade-level standards.
M = Meeting the standard consistently and independently.
P = Progressing towards meeting the standard.
B = Beginning to progress towards meeting the standard.
N = Not yet demonstrating progress towards meeting the standard.
* = An asterisk indicates that this standard has not been assessed during this particular term. Some units of study are taught at different times during the school year.
