The WPS K-5 English Language Arts Curriculum is evidence based, comprehensive and process oriented. It is aligned to the Massachusetts State Curriculum Framework for English/Language Arts and includes the core components of Foundational Skills, Engagement with Complex Text, and Writing.
The elementary schools follow a workshop model of delivery that is focused on the gradual release of responsibility from teacher to student independence and mastery. Our youngest students in K-2 receive systematic instruction with active practice in foundational skills everyday. In all elementary grades, daily instruction in reading and writing includes active engagement in whole group, small group and independent work.
Each of these structures is targeted to meet student needs in the context of the specific goals and objectives of lessons.
Our assessment systems allow us to identify and understand individual students’ reading strengths and needs so that we can effectively respond in our instruction and provide more intensive instruction/intervention when necessary.
