Dear Colleagues,
Happy Friday! I hope you each had a productive week. Thanks to everyone on our team for your flexibility in managing our most recent New England weather. Between the snow and bitter cold, I will be more than happy to leave January in the rear-view mirror!
Our work in schools does not exist within a vacuum and I know I have felt personally challenged as I watched recent events around the country, particularly in Minneapolis, and felt a mix of anger, sadness, and powerlessness. And of course, I continue to wonder how our students are interpreting these same events.
I have always believed that our country was founded on a set of beliefs that, while aspirational, we were always striving to more fully realize. Similarly, our district stands for a set of core values that includes diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; commitment to community; value and respect for human differences; and caring and cooperative relationships. How do we square these ideas with events happening in our own country today?
I don’t have a perfect answer, but I continue to believe that our collective efforts throughout our district to develop curious and critical minds along with compassionate hearts and empowered hands is essential. That has always been, and will always be, the best antidote to authoritarianism and the seed of democracy.
In the days ahead, let’s continue to model our core values and stand firmly alongside the members of our school community who may feel the most vulnerable at the moment. That’s what it means to be “One Wellesley.”
Thank you for what you do each day throughout the district in support of our students, our families, and each other. Have a great weekend.
Best,
David
