Superintendent’s Bulletin

May 1, 2015
Dear Colleagues,I hope everyone had a restful April vacation and a productive first week back.  At our School Committee meeting on Tuesday, I formally announced that Friday, June 19th is our last day (half day) for students.  The last day for teachers is Monday, June 22nd. If you have been following the news this past week, I’m sure you have seen the events transpiring in Baltimore that continue to challenge our thinking about race and the progress we have made as a nation.  Locally, we also had a very important community conversation about race and diversity Thursday night, sponsored by the World of Wellesley.  The conversation was difficult to hear as I listened to young people and adults of color recount their experiences in our town and in our school district.  I can only imagine how much more difficult it was for these individuals to live these events.  It remains essential for our schools to remain safe places where we continue to build the capacity of students and staff to engage in conversations about race.  Our very best hope to move forward locally and nationally is the work we do each day as educators to come to terms with our past, view diversity as a strength, and equip our students to advance conversations about race and equity when they leave our schools.  On a separate note, this year Administrative Professionals’ Day fell during our April vacation week.  While this day may receive relatively little attention, I think it is critical that we acknowledge the work our administrative professionals throughout the Wellesley Public Schools.  Whether we consider the role of our school secretaries or our colleagues who work at the central office, these individuals support our students, families, and staff with exceptional service each day and deserve our thanks. Finally, this week we hosted a large delegation of educators from the Philippines who traveled here to learn more about our special education programs.   I thank the administrators and teachers who took time to share their practice with our colleagues.  After hearing about the challenges present in classrooms in the Philippines, I am reminded of how fortunate we are in Wellesley to have the resources to provide our students with such an outstanding education.  I am also inspired to meet colleagues who, despite having far less resources, share the same sense of mission as we do and who want the same opportunities for their students.Thank you for all that you do for our students and have a great weekend.  Best regards,
David

Please be aware that the Town contribution to your health insurance premium has changed. However, there have been no changes to plan design, benefits or co-pays. Please review the new employee costs to determine which plan is best for you.
