Colleagues,

I’ve been thinking a great deal about athletics recently.  This is an important part of our school program and we consistently have participation rates that are among the highest in the state. While our teams are very competitive, our mission is equally framed by the importance of sportsmanship, leadership, and inclusion.  In short, athletics should be an extension of our core values.

During the past month across the state, there have been a number of concerning news stories about unacceptable behavior during competitions from players and parents. It’s deeply concerning to hear that some sports are having a hard time recruiting and retaining officials because of the sometimes toxic treatment they receive while doing their jobs.

It is my continued belief that our student athletes need to model the values upon which we place such a high premium. In fact, already this year there have been instances when our athletes have shown great composure when faced with unacceptable behavior. This speaks well to our approach, the character of our athletes, and the support of our coaches, who understand that they too are educators.

I understand that passions can run high at competitions and it’s imperative that we as adults model the type of behavior—in both word and in deed—that we want to see in our young people.

Enjoy the weekend and many thanks for your continued good work.

Best regards,

David
